"Ensure your native bird feeding regime has been in place long enough to ensure that your feathered guests know where to locate the seed in your garden before the temperature drops."
From the above site.

I suspect that positioning is important, too. In a moment of exuberance, I bought a native bird seed thing to hang in our bottlebrush, where birds like to congregate. There were still a few flowers on it, so still some birds around, but the whole thing disappeared within a day or two, plastic hanging thing and all.
As I'd placed it in a branch near a solid, 5' high wall, it's likely to have been possums or (ick) rats that enjoyed the food, not birds. Next time I'll think about it before placing it.
