I LOVE challah bread! A local deli has it every Friday, the loaves are golden and glazed and look delicious. The inside is more yellow than regular bread and a more open texture, I think it has egg in it. The taste is sweeter and richer than regular bread. It's delicious just plain, or toasted with butter or cream cheese. Yum.
The pronunciation is quite different than it looks too. The ch is more of a k sound, with a kind of rolled gutteral noise in there. Hm, doesn't make sense in print. Anyway, I have Polish Jew relatives, so that's how they said it.
The second link is terrific, thank you, Mary Amelia.

When I posted those and the thread, I thought I'd lost the plot. Thanks for the encouragement MV. I am glad the link was good after all. I came across a recipe that the lady said to use Italian bread or Challah and I just had to find out what it was. Sounds lovely.

Do you pronounce the middle bit of Challah like an Italian would? Just curious.

Hmmm. No, it's not like Italian. More like Khalla, but the kh is very European sounding, gutteral is the only word I can think to describe it. I assume most people over here would pronounce it "Khalla", or better still, just point and say "I'll have one of those thanks"! We tend to call it plaited egg bread anyway. ;D
