Here is a couple of different ideas to give a child or a family w/
children if you give the whole family one gift.
Gingerbread - Give the book The Gingerbread Man by Karen Lee Schmidt
(or any other gingerbread man book) with a gingerbread man cookie
cutter (found a great source for cookie cutters at great prices -
www.cookiecutter.com ) and a recipe and/or mix to make gingerbread
men.
Here is my recipe mix (but you can make a mix from any recipe - all
you do is mix all the dry ingredients together - except yeast - and
attach the remainder of the ingredients and directions on the recipe
card)
2 1/2 c all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 c sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container.
Here is the recipe to attach to the gift:
1 Pkg Gingerbread Cookie Mix
1/2 c Molasses
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 c hot water
Preheat the oven to 375F. Place the Gingerbread Cookie Mis in a large
bowl, and add the molasses, butter and water. Beat the mixture until
it is smooth. Refrigerate the dough for 2 hours. Cut the dough into
quarters and work with 1/4 at a time. Cut into gingerbread men shapes
(or other assorted shapes) and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake
for 8-9 minutes. Cool 2 minutes, then move to a rack to cool further.
Repeat with remaining dough.
Another idea:
For the book Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs (Judi Barrett) or
Strega Nona(Tomie dePaola) (or any other book about spaghetti)
Make a gift basket w/ a package of spaghetti, your favorite
spaghettie and meatball recipe and/or a jar of spaghetti sauce
(homemade or bought) a shaker of oregano or anything else spaghetti
you can think of - maybe even a mix to make french bread or bread
sticks
Another: (this one is not mine but comes from the book Book Cook by
Janet Bruno)
For the Eric Carle book The Very Busy Spider
Put in a gift basket with the book these items and the following
recipe:
small bag of large marshmallows, bag of m&m's small bag of chocolate
chips, and black string licorice
Recipe:
1. Gather the ingredients (to make 6)
6 Large Marshmallows
12 M&M's
1/2 chocolate chips
string licorce (16" for each spider)
2. Poke 8 pieces of 2-inch string licorice into each marshmallow for
legs.
3. Melt over low heat 1/2 cup chocolate chips
4. Set spider on waxed paper and dribble a large spoonful of melted
chocolate over each marshmallow
5. Add 2 M&M's for eyes
6. Cool and eat.
You can do this with lots of different children's books.
