All the years I was growing up during the 50's and 60's my Dad would put up a huge village under neath our Christmas tree with a train running all around the town. For many years I never knew that other people didn't do that. Then I went to Elementary school and heard from the other children how they got their gifts set up under the tree.
When I heard this strange custom I actually felt somehow deprived? Can you imagine?
My dad would start a month or so before Christmas and work on that beautiful village each night. He used coffee grounds for dirt roads, little pebbles for cobblestone streets and tons of sugar for snow. It was amazing.
When Dad stopped doing the yard after he retired he divided up all the houses and things for us children to have. Two of my favourite pieces are the train my dad bought when I was born, and the beautiful church with stained glass windows, that winds up and plays Silent Night.
When I married I decided that I was going to put *gifts* under my tree. So that became our tradition.
Two years ago dh became interested in setting up a village so guess what, now I am back to having the village under the tree.
What are some of your family traditions involving the tree?
