Well, I just cannot get into Christmas 'down south'. I'm definitely a northern-hemisphere person when it comes to this time of year. Down here, I'm in a vacation state of mind, rather than a festive state of mind. Alister and I head off for our annual holiday the day after Christmas this year - normally we leave late on Christmas day, and divide our long trip into two days, but this time we're just going to do it all at once.

Dh's family Christmas is tonight. We'll have dinner and play Dirty Santa. I got a 10# Prime Rib for our Christmas dinner. I invited my brother and his family, and dh's Aunt Bea. Remember, she lost her husband several months ago (then she lost a son to cancer). She's not looking very good and I suspect this may be her last Christmas. Even though she drives everyone nuts with her dementia, she's about the sweetest woman I've ever met. I better ask mil over too! YIKES!

I really don't have the Christmas spirit yet, maybe once I start baking my cookies for the holiday, I'll have the C'mas spirit. Still haven't set up our 4 1/2' fake tree yet, ( it takes me 3 hrs. just to decorate it ) nor have I set out any of my C'mas decorations. All 3 of our dd's will be celebrating the holiday at their own home this year, so I just don't have the holiday cheer.

Seems like you need to borrow some kids to decorate it for you!

Domesticgoddess - we haven't decorated, either. We finally hung a strand of lights the other day, but it's not the same down here - it's light til 930 or so and by then you're thinking it's getting close to bedtime. In fact, we've only had a tree one of the four years I've been here. If I were in Florida and didn't decorate I'd be stressed out - here, it's kinda okay. I do miss the Christmas shenanigans, though - I think it's nice to make a big to-do now and again.
Hi, B-R. What do you guys do in OZ at Christmas time? Here, it's often a BBQ and nibbles.

I'm sorry that happened Phyllis, it can happen so quickly and stress may have brought it on. I hope you can sit down soon.
Haven't been to any BBQs Beth. There was a staff party last weekend but we didn't go. Kind of a lack of babysitters here and we are saving up for our son's uni, that will come up very quickly.
We are having a hot Christmas lunch followed by an icecream type pudding. We will go on a lights tour in the next two days where you wait until it is just on dark and drive around to look at how the houses are decorated. There is one house across the corner from us and our little girl was admiring them last night and she seemed very keen to see some more. At our old home a buses used to come into our court to see the neighbours houses. We never seemed to have time to get the garden right beforehand even though we tried, so I was pleased when we got gardening done here last weekend. The lights though need more cleaning, we just have one string right across the front which is quite long.

Beth I suppose you could have a card string and have a cup of tea with a shortbread, that has been a favorite for me, especially a few years ago when we struggled with getting the tree up.
A favorite here is watching Carols by Candlelight on TV, particularly the Melbourne one. Our eldest daughter went to one in our town. I may have missed it this year not sure.
I thought in America you would have this but it is most likely too cold? We go to a park and are given candles etc. and sing Carols.

Hi BR - there are carols in America - but I lived in a small town, so the only 'to do' at Christmas time would have been in the small local churches.
Did I say I lived in a small town? It was a blink-miss-it kinda town.
We normally do put the Christmas cards up on a string, but this year neither of us seemed too bothered with it. We have received some cards but we just haven't sent any out. Must get on the ball with that next year. I do miss the 'fuss' about Christmas on the one hand and do NOT miss the stress on the other.
