Do you remember me complaining about the freeze/thaw cycle here in Iowa? Do you remember me talking about how cold it was in early December?
Last year, at the beginning of the new year, we had a foot of snow and sub zero temps. The same as we had a few weeks back. Blake had an extra week of "winter" break because of the weather.
Today about half our grass is green and all but the walnut trees have buds on them.
I just put all my towels on the drying rack. I think I'm going to put the rack out on the porch. I'd put them on the line, but as soon as the sun goes down the temp will drop below freezing again.

Hey Karen,
It's 70 here and raining.....forecasted high here tomorrow....75! Of course, we don't have the cold winters and snow that you all have....but it is so strange to see folks walking around in shorts and tank tops in January!!!!!!

Strange here as well girls. Today the temps topped out at 65. Suppose to be more of the same the coming week. Usually late December and January is pretty cold here.
I am betting when we finally get cold and snow we get a big lasting dose of it.

When we lived in our hometown we got below freezing during the frosts. We still left our clothes out. I am not an expert though. In Dakota in Little House On The Prairie, or rather a later book by Laura Ingalls Wilder called The Long Winter, they freeze dried their clothes on the days after the storms I think. But here after a good frost we usually have lovely sunny days where it is quite warm.
Today it is 82oF inside, I don't think it will get much hotter outside, there is a nice breeze as well. A few Australians are having a tough day with fires today.

My last couple February's in Florida were odd ones - daytime temps of 90+F - though we always had another cold spell before Easter. I remember once at the prison, when I was in charge of the landscaping squad, we were due to have a visit from the brand-spanking-new boss of the Department. Visits like that are few and far between when things are good so the bosses at the prison wanted the place to look good. Now, we had a clean compound all the time, and we had quite a few flower beds (lots, actually), but most of the time we had to grow our flowers from seeds, and most of the seeds had to come from the previous year's flowers.
On this occasion, Mr Dukes sent me to the store with a budget of $300 for flowers. I felt rich! I brought back a van load full of flowers - some 1000 all up, if I remember correctly.
We came back and got it all planted in a day or so.
A few days later, there was a freeze warning. "Pull it all up," said Mr Dukes. We did. What a mess! We had trays of flowers everywhere!
When that cold spell was over, we planted them again.
And wouldn't you know it? Another cold spell.
"Pull them up," said Mr Dukes. So we did.
Finally, a day or so before the big boss arrived, we were able to put them back in the ground for the third and final time. We had lost some of them, but most survived. However, by that time, we were tired of replanting the same flowers, and there is no way we dedicated as much time to overall design as we had the first two times!
Ah, life in the prison system. If anyone ever wrote a true-to-life story of it, noone would believe it!

That is a good story Beth, you did well with the flowers.

Noyt sure how high we got today but we weren't in shorts & tanktops! LOL. It's a brisk 33°F here right now and expected to drop to about 28°F tonight.

Quite windy yesterday - or was that the day before? Hmmmm.... <puts on thinking cap> ... Yep, that was the day before. Yesterday was ... <mind goes blank> ... yesterday was... yesterday. TODAY, we had a forecast of 20C so I wore shorts and a summer short-sleeved shirt. Wouldn't you know it? 20C can be warm or cool, depending on wind, rain, etc. Today was a cool-ish day! Others were wearing jackets! Supposed to be 25C tomorrow.

I always feel just cold in 20c, it has to be just a fraction hotter.

That's 'cuz it's always so HOT over there! I wear shorts in anything over say 15 if it's sunny. :-) Sometimes wear my long sleeves with them (they're long shorts, comfy for working).

I was looking at the hot looking sky out the window yesterday or the day before, thinking how could it ever have been foggy until after lunch, but I guess I will find out soon enough. In our hometown it was warm even in winter after the frost melted. However, it would be hot there until midnight now.

My Mum says she is having nightmares about the fires now. You don't get hot with wind everyday thankfully.
