Here is a lovely American? article that includes the Devonshire tea, bacon, beetroot and other things I have mentioned occasionally, with a lovely photo of Ballarat, where some of my dh's family come from. goaustralia.about.com/library/uccan3.htm

Have you never heard of it Lynn? It is like the New Zealand and English Marmite. We had to invent our own when there was a shortage of materials once I think. It is a spread that you put on toast, and most people can't live without it. I get heaps of complaints when it is not there. It costs $8 per jar, but I think that is a measure of its importance lol. So if we run out before shopping day we end up with a tiny jar, very tiny. When I grew up we didn't have peanut butter in the cupboard. When I went to stay with my aunty she had peanut butter and I thought that was awful that I had to eat it. A friend of mine introduced me to peanut butter and vegemite on Salada crackers and that is beautiful. I will post a picture. It is a yeast extract and is black. You don't spread it on thick. www.vegemite.com.au/

Cool, BR!! It almost looks like our apple butter....but it isn't sweet, is it? I have heard G speak of it eaten on some kind of crackers, maybe the ones you mentioned.
Thanks for the pic and info. Now you've got me interested in all things Australian, so I'll be somewhat informed when I come.....lol

Don't think I am familiar with that.....we have maple, corn, sorghum, cane and flavored like vanilla.
Apple butter is sweet and spicy. Very good.

I think you can get things from World Market I think is it called. You may not like it still, but spread it thin on white bread and butter, maybe you would like it that way?
