My grandmother lives around 40 miles from my home, so she is long distance for me to call on the phone. I try to keep in touch with her over the phone since I don't always get to go and see her. Since she was long distance, I was always hesitant to call her, (Gram loves to visit), and I was always very conscious of how long we visited....as it showed up on the phone bill in big charges! Problem solved. A few years ago, I bought an AT&T calling card at a place around here called Sam's Club. I bought a prepaid 600 minute calling card, my minutes are 3.5 cents a minute. My phone company can't even come close to that. What a new freedom! Over the past few years I call Gram, and we chat as often or as long as I or she wants to. The best part is that I don't think of a time limit or money anymore, as the minutes are already paid for! when I use them up, I just renew them. Love that prepaid phone card!

Don't you just love Grannies? Boy how I miss mine......
That's great, Tammie, that you two can talk at an affordable price. What a blessing!

When I lived in Florida, a (good) calling card enabled me to call NZ for pennies per minute - well, 10 or 20 of them! Without the card, the cost was astronomical!
From NZ, we can call the US for $6NZ and talk up to 2 hours (used to be unlimited on weekends, then went down to 6 hours, then down to 2 hours). That's about $4USD - if my sister were to call me without a special international plan she'd only be able to talk for a few minutes for that price.

Betcha miss your sister Beth.
I don't carry long distance on my land line. We have a ton of minutes on our cell plan and that let's me phone almost everyone using my minutes. But I have some friends in Canada and am hoping that Cingular comes out with a better rate for calling them.

I just love that calling card, let's me check up on friends that live in the mountains! *grin* I would love to use the minutes on my cell phone, except that we live in the boonies and they need to put more cellular towers out in our area.

That's great Tammie! I've been thinking about that...how to have cheaper long distances...I don't make any, really. I mostly phone my parents and they have a special number that makes it free for me or anyone calling them. Oh and I miss my grannies too. It happens that I just dreamnt of my grandmother's home and my gr.grandmother's home too, just last night....

Prepaid cards are great! We have used them in the past with much success. Right now we have Vonage for our phone company. It uses our cable internet as our phone line. We pay a monthly fee and it doesn't charge us for time. Basically no long distance charges. It works for us right now.
