Now, I know this probably seems like it ought to be in the cooking section, but bear with me. I have NEVER been able to make biscuits that you couldn't use to build a house. Even the canned ones!
My Mom always made hers from a can, or bisquik so I never learned how to make them. Now, her mom, on the other hand, made biscuits that were awesome!
So, in the wee hours this morning, when I was starting to wake up, I started remembering her making biscuits. She had this wooden bread bowl she used. Never measured a thing. They weren't rolled biscuits, but drop ones - and soft and light and yummy!
So, I went over in my mind what I remember about her making them. I decided to try it. Just got some self rising flour out (which John bought when I told hime to get Bread flour
) put some shortening in, and cut that in with my pastry cutter.
Then I added milk until the thickness looked right. They were good! Yay!
What's really amazing is my Grandma died in 1975 so it's been over 31 years since I watched her make biscuits!
