Pincushion Jar
A pincushion jar is not only an easy and fun craft for all ages, it makes a wonderful gift. Even if the recipient is not a seamstress, everyone needs a place to store extra spools of thread and needles for mending. The top of the jar is used as pincushion, while the inside can be used to store thread, extra buttons or other small sewing supplies.
Materials Needed:
Mason Jar
Mason Cap with dome lid (including the cardboard circle that comes with lids)
5 cotton balls
Fabric
Pinking shears
Compass
Glue gun
Lace (optional)
Directions:
1. When purchasing mason jar caps with dome lids, they should come in three parts: 1. The outer *****-on bands. 2. The circular lid, which is enamel and rubber on one side, and metal on the other. 3. The circular thin cardboard, used to protect the circular lid during packing, and is normally discarded by the customer. Do NOT discard, you will use it in the craft.
2. Using the compass, trace a circle twice the circumference of the circular lid onto your fabric. Cut the circle out with the pinking shears.
3. Take one outer *****-on band, and place upside down.
4. Place the fabric circle on top of the band, with the right side facing down. Center fabric on band.
5. Place five cotton balls in the center of the fabric, having them form a circle. They should be side by side, and not on top of each other.
5. Lay the circular lid on top of the cotton balls, with the enamel side facing you, and metal side pressing against the cotton balls.
6. Press down. This should poke the fabric covered cotton balls through the band, forming the pincushion.
7. Take the edges of the fabric circle and fold over, into the center of the enamel circle and cover with the disposable cardboard circle. Press down.
8. Use the glue gun to run a seal along the inside of the band, gluing the cardboard circle into place and sealing off the fabric edges from sight.
9. If desired, decorate the outside of the band with lace or other ornaments.
