I like to think of homesteading as looking after yourself. DH and I haven't been doing as much canning etc. as we used to. We have moved quite accidently to a clean air, type of place and occasionally the power and water get cut off, nearly on the same day. The food shop shuts down when the power goes off too. We blow light bulbs all the time. I need to help myself a little more, and be a little more prepared. My Mum knew how to light a kerosene light for example, I do have a light we can use though, that is just an example. Here is a simple but interesting site. www.homesteadtechnology.com/

Can't wait to check out the site br. I always wanted to homestead, but I guess it won't be. I admire those who do and I think it is a much more difficult life. Lots of work involved. Your place sounds like where we use to live in the country. When the wind blew the electric was out. Here, where I live now it has only been off once in 5 years, but the water goes off on a regular basis, I guess when they are working on it. (we have city water)
