I took an old chicken carrier that had wood spindles all around it, put short wood legs on it (made from 100 yr. old posts) and turned it into a coffee table! It is about 25X38" and inside I put raffia, my little chicken and duck ornaments and a string of white christmas lights. Makes a great night light that we use when we watch tv. The finish is still the old weathered wood and the turn post legs (about 8" high) matched it just perfect! I'm in my country "chicken" mode in the livingroom..........at the moment!
In the family room downstairs I took an old 6 pane window, turned it on it's side, added a shelf all across the bottom and gave it a pale green wash of paint. Then I made some little curtains and tacked them behind the glass. I also tacked up some grape vines across the top and down the side in the front and also added lights to it. On the shelf I put a small log cabin that had been a flower container (all old wood)........and put ivy in it. I also added a small birch bark canoe, a mineature Christmas tree and two bears. Then I made a 4X10" wood sign and used twigs to spell out the word Welcome. I tied hemp rope on each side and hung it from the top of the window, just under the grape vines. It is on the wall above my couch down there and I still like it I guess cause it hasn't been changed out for something else in some time.
At one time I had a Huge kitchen with an old hard rock maple floor once used in a school. One end of it I turned into a country store. I have an old antique grocery cart with removeable top and bottom baskets with handles. I put it next to the wood stove in there and put kindling in the top and newspaper in the bottom basket. I also had an old Sam Adams beer rack that was narrow and very tall. I used it in my country store to display all my vegetable cans and it was very colorful when it was fully stocked.
To me there is nothing more fun than finding something old and using it for something completely different than what it was intended for. I just love doing that. Ok..........lets hear from someone else............I need some more ideas!
I will take some pics. of both of these and then figure out how to post them. I'll get someone to help me do that. Computers are not my strong point. I do know how to e-mail a pic. to someone but, not sure about getting them on here right.
