We waited for them to start roosting before we went to move them, so it was pretty dark by the time we got done. We moved 40 or 50, but have lost about 10 to varmints. We're thinking about making the old wash house into a chicken house for now. It's the only outbuilding we can close up at night.

Karen, that's so great! What do you mean by you wait until they start *roosting* ...? Thanks! Cute picture!

Chickens roost in the evening, they go in and "go to bed". I really don't want to fence them in. Hopefully we can move them up to someplace where we can just close them in at night, then let them back out during the day.

Congrats! I currently have 8 chickens and I really enjoy having them around. I used to have a much larger flock but they were wiped out by critters so I had to start all over again. It's been my experience that your chickens will be much safer if you can build them a totally fenced in area otherwise all the critters are going to kill them off. We had our earlier flock fenced in but they were all killed so we now have a small "cage" type enclosure for them that has fencing over the top and the fence sides are buried in the ground. So far we haven't had any critter problems and we have fox, raccoons and an owl that live here. We also had two stray dogs come through last week but the chickens remained safe from those too. I love seeing chickens out loose in the yard but it is heart-wrenching when you find them all missing or dead. I guess I'm just trying to encourage you to think about building an enclosed pen for your new chickies so you won't have a bunch of critters bothering them. It seems like every critter in the world likes chickens. Hope your chickens do well for you and you have lots of fun watching them and enjoy all those eggs!
