2 cups granulated sugar 2 medium eggs 1/2 cup molasses (dark) 1 1/2 cups shortening 2 tsp. finely crushed anise seeds (must be ground finely) 4 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. salt 4 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cloves (ground) 1 tsp. ginger (ground preferably)
Cream the sugar, eggs, molasses, shortening and ground anise until it resembles a smooth paste. Sift the dry ingredients remaining three times and add to the anise mixture. Mix well. Roll the dough into balls with your hands and roll each ball in granulated sugar. Place on lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes.
Makes 3 dozen.
